Absolutely! Bernie barked to let us know when she needed to go out to do her business in the backyard, when she needed back inside, and precisely when it was breakfast and supper times.
Bernie also snored like a lumberjack.

What was Bernie's favourite treat?
Bernie LOVED baked sweet potato and chicken. She also loved pieces of oranges and apples.

How did you communicate with Bernie?
Hand signals - we worked with our veterinarian, who also has extensive experience and education in animal behaviour and training. Using positive reinforcement (aka "clicker" training), she helped us use consistency and timing to ensure Bernie paid attention to us and understood and performed requested behaviours. Bernie loved food - she literally worked for her supper. This is how we trained her to participate as a therapy dog in our kids' grief workshops.
