Bernie's Buddies is committed to helping Calgary's kids and youth live more fully after a death loss in their lives.
1 in 5 children will experience the death of someone close to them by age 18.
(Kenneth Doka, Editor of OMEGA, Journal of Death and Dying)
We offer an alternative resource to help grieving kids because:
we recognize that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work for navigating grief emotions. What works for one child may not be the most appropriate or effective solution for the next. Our intent is not to replace or offer conventional counseling or therapy. Our approach focuses instead on providing a supportive community experience with peers also experiencing a death loss.
research shows that childhood grief supports encourage healthy adjustment to loss. Healthy children lead to healthy communities. Healthy communities lead to productive societies.
families often experience financial challenges from a death loss. Through the generous support of donors and volunteers, our programs are available at no cost.
WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT
1. Our approach: Bernie's Buddies provides a unique, integrated workshop approach using peer groups where kids living with a loss can interact and support each other while engaging in unique activities available at each session:
a therapy dog visit,
yoga movement and relaxation techniques, and
creative grief conversation.
2. Our flexibility: Bernie's Buddies has the ability to provide our workshops as stand-alone events, or to complement existing programming with other youth-oriented service providers, adding grassroots capacity to childhood bereavement supports.
Grief is in two parts. The first is loss. The second is the remaking of life.
